Larimer County is an important center for bioscience activity in Colorado and
the Rocky Mountain West. Research from Colorado State University (CSU)
has been commercialized through local companies, larger companies have
licensed technologies, and serial entrepreneurs have created a legacy of
startup successes. This industry activity is supported by the leading edge
science at CSU, the legendary quality of life, and a favorable business climate.
Like Colorado, Larimer County is poised to be an important regional and national
center for the biosciences.

The Larimer County Bioscience Initiative, a group of organizations and individuals
that include CSU, Fort Collins Technology Incubator, Colorado Bioscience
Association, NCEDC and several bioscience firms have completed a strategic plan
to enhance the creation and growth of a bioscience cluster in Larimer County.

Driving much of the regional bioscience growth is the presence of top scienctists
in their respective fields. CSU is a global leader in infectious disease research,
and is home to a Level 3 biocontainment laboratory. CSU was recently awarded
a four-year, $40 million federal grant to develop treatments and vaccines for
bioterrorism agents and infectious diseases. This award designates CSU as a
“regional center of excellence,”  linking it with other universities, hospitals and
companies in the Rocky Mountain region, and providing funding to test new ideas.
Northern Colorado is also home to the Centers for Disease Control’s Division of
Vector Borne Infectious Diseases.
